I need help but I don't know what will suit me best

That's OK.  Just give me a call or an email with your contact phone number and a good time to ring you back.  We can have a no obligation chat about your problem and see if I can help you.

What is sleep training?

Sleep training can take many forms. Many people dislike the idea of sleep training, imagining their children will just be left to cry themselves to sleep.  I prefer a gentler more reassuring approach, giving your child confidence to re-settle. As your child gains confidence I reduce the support they receive, until they are able to self settle happily themselves. I also help set in place a daily routine and tips to follow during the day that will set your child up for sleep success. A concentrated 5 nights effort gets them well on their way and usually totally sleeping through the night.

I will guide and support parents for 5 days if they would prefer to do this themselves.

What does Xanthe do when she stays for sleep training?

During an initial consultation it is helpful to have everyone who will be involved in the sleep program present. Together we will discuss why your child is having difficulties sleeping. I explain the theory of sleep and the techniques I will use. I gauge how confident you are feeling about this process so that we can progress at a speed that feels comfortable. If you choose to have me to stay through the night for 5 nights I arrive at 9pm to hear how the day has gone and go up to your child and give a dream feed if required to settle him or her down for the night around 10pm. When your child awakes I will settle them back to sleep, reducing the support  needed as your baby gets used to the new techniques and learns to self-settle. Throughout the 5 nights period, I will report on your child's progress before I leave in the morning, and offer suggestions on how to organise nap-times/bedtime until I arrive later in the day.  By the final night I will be giving your child time to practise their ability to self-settle, leaving you and your baby with confidence.

If you have booked a 2 hour sleep consultation I will visit your home for up to 2 hours to discuss the above and explain how you can change your child's sleep pattern. It is helpful to speak to all involved in the sleep training at this time so everyone understands the process and can support each other. There can be a lot of information to take in so it is also helpful to book a session when you won't be interrupted, eg in the evening or when the children are with someone else. Most people take notes to refer back to in case new habits slip after a month or so! I continue this consultation with 5 days of follow up phone calls to answer your new questions and encourage and support you through the first 5 nights.  By this time most parents can see the difference it has made to their child and whole family, and have the skills to continue alone. Additional phone calls are always available at £15.

Will my child be sleeping through by the time you leave?

Typically, children are sleeping through the night after five nights, but this does vary depending on the commitment from the parents and the health of the child.  During my time with you, I will have initiated my sleep strategies, explaining them fully to you as I go, so that I leave you feeling confident with your new skills and able to continue with your child's progress.

Why does my child need to be over 6 months to have the sleep training?

Prior to the age of 6 months children need close physical contact and may still need night-time feeds. After 6 months most children start to give up their night feeds.  After this point a  dream feed may still be given, but otherwise a healthy child can usually sleep for 12 hours at night without extra feeds.   Extra naps will probably be needed during the day.  For this reason Xanthe only offers her sleep package for infants aged 6 months or more.

What if I'm breastfeeding?

This is not a problem, I can bring the baby to your bed or call you when you need to feed.  I will settle the baby back to sleep afterwards.

Does Xanthe need a bed to sleep in?

Yes please.  I'm up when your child needs me in the night, but I need somewhere to rest my head in the meanwhile.  Ideally, in a separate room near-by but I can share a bedroom with your child.  Air beds and camp-beds are happily accepted.

Does Xanthe need any meals?

Only when working over a mealtime and I'm happy to join in with the family meals.  I won't need breakfast on the sleep package and I have no food allergies.

What time will Xanthe arrive?

The first night of sleep training will start at 9pm to give me an opportunity to get to know your child's routine and waking habits.  I will explain my strategies for the night once we have identified the problem.  It is helpful if all primary care-givers are available during this initial meeting.  Subsequent nights starting times are negotiable and can start later if desired. I will leave at 7am. Other packages can be agreed individually on booking.

Sleep consultations are booked at a time to suit you.

How do I say Xanthe's name?

It's an unusual name, don't worry, lots of people struggle so you won't be alone.  It's pronounced Zanth-ee.
